Sunday School

The Sunday School of St. Mary’s Indian Orthodox Church, Lucan, is at the heart of our parish life. It provides children with a nurturing space to grow in faith, learn the teachings of Christ, and experience the rich worship and traditions of the Orthodox Church in ways that are meaningful and age-appropriate.

Through prayer, scripture, songs, and interactive lessons, children are guided to build a strong foundation in Christian living. Just as importantly, it also connects them to the wider parish community, fostering friendships, fellowship, and a sense of belonging within the Body of Christ.

Objectives

  • Provide a strong foundation in the Orthodox faith.
  • Lead children to a living relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Equip them with biblical knowledge and spiritual discipline.
  • Foster fellowship, community belonging, and Christ-centered values.

Classes

The classes range from Kindergarten to 12th Grade and are divided into four stages:

  • Preparatory: Kindergarten
  • Introduction: Classes 1 to 4
  • Developing: Classes 5 to 8
  • Mastery: Classes 9 to 12

Secondary level concludes after Class 10, with students awarded the Sunday School Final Certificate. Higher Secondary continues for two additional years.

In addition, once a month, children also attend an English Holy Qurbana as part of their spiritual formation and to build familiarity with the liturgy in the language they use daily.

Curriculum

Our curriculum follows the Orthodox Syrian Sunday School Association of the East (OSSAE – UK, Europe & Africa Diocese). Lessons are conducted in English and cover:

  • Holy Bible studies
  • Orthodox faith, liturgy, sacraments and traditions
  • Lives of saints and church history
  • Moral teachings and Christian values for daily life

Class Structure

  • Weekly Sessions: Hybrid format – Online classes on Sunday mornings, in-person after Holy Qurbana.
  • Format: Short prayer & hymn, structured lesson, interactive discussions, and activities.
  • Duration: 30–45 minutes per session.
  • Grouping: Students divided by grade levels, each handled by a dedicated teacher.
  • Assessment: Mid & final tests, events, annual exam. Certificates awarded at key stages.

Extracurricular Activities & Events

  • Student Dedication Service – Dedication of children at the start of the academic year.
  • OVBS (Orthodox Vacation Bible School) – Bible lessons, songs, crafts, and fellowship.

Role of Parents & Home Practice

Parents are encouraged to take an active role in reinforcing lessons at home. Daily family prayers, Bible reading, and participation in Holy Qurbana complement the Sunday School experience and strengthen children’s faith.

Teaching Team & Leadership

Our teachers are committed parish members trained in the Orthodox tradition. They serve as mentors, guiding children not only in academics of faith but also in living as true witnesses of Christ.
